Mining Heritage Unearthed Presentations

This time last month we were busy organising the final touches to Mining Heritage Unearthed; we have now had time to reflect on what a fantastic event it was.  The greatest contributory factor to the success of this event was the knowledge and diversity of both the speakers and all the delegates at the event, thank you to all who participated and attended. The event feedback we have received so far has been very positive and the event has led to some organisations signing up to CISNET to benefit from all of our other services. If you have not yet completed a feedback form or an CISNET application form, please click the above links and email a saved copy back to e.harrocks@tsd.ac.uk.

Speakers revealed for an unique networking opportunity in Wales

The full speakers list and event schedule for Mining Heritage Unearthed has been revealed today.  The action packed day lists more than 10 speakers from right across the creative and cultural spectrum. Please click here for a full event guide. The event is launched by a series of talks that will each uncover an aspect of Wales' mining heritage, including what heritage assets are available, new technology and community developments,  and reflections on how to support sustained community involvement. The event will then extend to current products available to deliver our heritage to a wider audience. This time speakers will herald from local SMEs and will include both mobile and static interpretation solutions. Based on the research carried out by CISNET one of the biggest barriers to developing new projects has been a lack of suitable funding and learning of new opportunities.  The afternoon session of Mining Heritage Unearthed turns this around and includes sessions from open and suitable funding sources plus information on two new projects set to commence this year! Mining Heritage Unearthed offers a lot to take on board, especially when so many of the confirmed attendees also have their own ideas to share.  To bring the event to a close a special innovation session will be held that will help all attending bring their ideas together. There are a still some spaces available for this free of charge event, and anyone interested in attending are urged to contact the Welsh CISNET project officer without delay at e.harrocks@tsd.ac.uk Please click here for a full event guide.

Tray Festival, Tomar – Portugal

2/11-7-2011 The Tray Festival or the Divine Holy Spirit Festival is one of the most ancient cultural and religious manifestations in Portugal. According to investigators, its origin is found in the Harvest Festival offered to the Goddess Ceres. Its Christianization can be owed to the Queen Saint Isabel who emitted its basis on what the Holy Spirit Congregation would be like, solidarity movement that in many places of the kingdom assimilated the primitive pagan festivals. The highest moment of the festivities that joined rich and poor without distinction occurred on Pentecost Sunday, day in which the fire tongues descended upon the Apostles symbolizing the equalness of all before God. This “Thanks Giving” and offering Festival has maintained its characteristics unchanged until the XVII Century. Some of the changes that appeared are justified by giving more splendour to this Festival. The tradition continues and many of its ceremonies as the Holy Spirit Cows arrival Parade, who is also named the Butler Parade, the Tray Parade, its blessing, the tray shape, the dresses of the girls who carry the Trays and the Pêza which is the distribution of the bread and meat is maintained (for the past few years the wine has also been distributed). The main characteristic of the Tray Festival is the Parade, with a variable number of trays, in which are represented all sixteen parishes of the district. This parade of dignity, colour, glamour and emotion passes through the main streets of the city, a distance of about 5 kms, amongst bedspreads hanging form the windows, millions of visitors and a rain of flower petals that are cast in an enthusiastic manner upon the Parade.

Andanças 2011: Music and Dance

Andanças is a festival which promotes popular music and dance as a privileged means of learning, generation exchange, knowledge and culture. In constant aspiration to keep updated, Andanças would like to renew social habits such as living through music, recapturing traditional ball-like parties by using multiple approaches for popular dance, from Portugal and all over the world, aiming to regain musical and choreographic traditions, and mixing these with contemporary elements. Therefore, at Andanças, it is possible to learn more than half a hundred different dances: this is the result of the synergy between all the people from around the world who come to the festival looking forward to sharing their knowledge. From Portuguese dances to African and American, to several European dances: Hungarian, Balkan, Basque, Gipsy, Baltic, Belgian, from the Poitou, Italian, Galician, Catalan, Mediterranean, and many more. Beyond stimulating the curiosity for diversity, Andanças is a reminder that popular music is (also) a synonym of identity and survival. In regard to some Portuguese groups, some of them stemming from previous Andanças Festivals, many of these groups will be at the Festival, introducing new projects: it is important to pay attention to new music and dance trends. 31st July to 7th August, Portugal
